WHO IS JESUS CHRIST?
Who is the Lord Jesus Christ?
Col. 1:18
In the sea of Galilee (Mtt. 8:27) the frightened and grateful disciples questioned what manner of man is this that even the winds and the sea obey Him. Ask this question “who is Jesus” to the enemies of Jesus ( Luke 5:21) They will grumble He has no power to forgive sins. People still wonder who Jesus is. No other man has ever polarized human history like Jesus. At the mention of His name many bow in worship. While the same name causes many others to lash out in hatred and anger. Jesus encountered many multitudes in His Earthly path way. Think of interviewing some of them and find out what they will answer to the question who is Jesus… Take for example … The blind man of John 9 and blind Bartemeous of Luke 19, the ten lepers, the demon possessed of Gadara who had a legion and Mary magdalene the sevenfold possessed. A Syrophoenician had a possessed daughter while when descending from the mount of Transfiguration a man brought his possessed son to be delivered, the multitudes he twice fed, the soldiers who crucified him and witnessed his death, the thief on the right side of the cross who received eternal life after repenting. There was Lazarus of John 11 who came back from the dead after four days and countless testimonies. If the ocean were ink and the skies paper all the loving stories of what Jesus accomplished will drain dry the oceans while the papers run out of supply. If the earth was prepared as a library to contain the books of these stories it Will not afford enough space to keep these books. What is your life changing story…based on the question ” Who is Jesus” to you?
Paul answered the question who is Jesus in Col. 1:18.
With the Lord’s help let’s learn some life changing truths to apply in our Christian lives.
Jesus is the head of the Church. Col. 1:18a. He is equally the Hope of all making. Col 1:18b….the begining. Not leaving out He is the Heart of the redeemed who love Him…. Col. 1:18c….that in all things He might have the Preeminence.
Let’s meditate on part a of these three thoughts. How is Jesus the head?
A. The supreme Head.
He is the head of the disciples who have slept in the Lord and are now in heaven. He is the head of all the redeemed saints living today. He is the head of all that will through the gospel come to be saved. Is Jesus your supreme head or will you come today and trust Him? He is the supreme head of all the saints past present and future.
B. The absolute essential head. Fundamental things point to essentials we cannot do without. Air is an essential to life. Water, blood, food etc. Without these you will die. In our body the brain is an essential. It gives life critically needed outputs to the rest of the body. Any that does not yield to the brain’s input will be considered paralyzed as it will lose its functionality. Spiritually our absolute Essential Head the Lord Jesus is to the Spiritual, the Church what the human brain is to the body.
1Cor. 12:27 the Church is the body of Christ and Christ is the Head . As the absolute essential fundamental head,
Our Lord gives the following to the body the Church :
- Direction. Eph. 5:1… His dear children follow Him.
- Sets Goals and plans. James 4:14-15… If the Lord wills…
- Enables usefulness Eph. 2:10, 2Cor. 4:7… His workmanship ordained to good works…. Treasure kept in earthen vessels… Whose praise is of God…
- Ensures existence. 1Cor. 6:19-20… Glorify God with your body and spirits… You are not yours…. You are bought with a price. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Do you know your physical head gives these four essential services to the rest of your body? Without Christ the head no individual Christian will have these qualities of direction, usefulness, existence and godly goals and plans? The same could be said of the local Church.
How healthy is your relation to the Lord Jesus? Who is Jesus as concerns your needs in these four areas, Is He your Head ..? Are you like the Bereans researching the answer or like the Macedonians giving the answer? This question meets many at the crossroads of salvation in heaven and damnation in hell . The direction they take depends on their answer, good or bad road souls take into eternity hangs around this same question.. Have you in salvation answered this question?
Now Jesus loved to ask this same question. In Mtt 16 not only he asked what the general publick thought he was but to his own disciples he asked who do you say I am? Is Jesus your head? Does he give direction, goals, plans, usefulness and existence? If in any of these blessings of the head you are not doing well, which of them will it be? Are you yielded to your head the Lord Jesus?
